We are the Criw Cymraeg. We are responsible for encouraging our peers to speak Welsh confidently, support them when needed and share our ideas for promoting a strong Welsh ethos within our school.
Criw Cymraeg at Ysgol Carreg Hir:
Welsh is taught in a whole school approach at Ysgol Carreg Hir through the use of developmental and progressive language patterns. These language patterns change each half term. There is progression in the linguistic skills throughout the year groups from Nursery to Year 6. Learning in this way allows teachers to differentiate for individual learners in each class. It is very important that pupils are given the opportunities to revise and build upon the skills they have learnt in previous years at the school. The language patterns are used and developed in daily drilio sessions, used incidentally and in conversational Welsh and are also used to promote the use of Welsh in other subjects. It is our goal as Criw Cymraeg at Ysgol Carreg Hir to encourage Welsh to be a living language at our school that pupils speak confidently and with enjoyment.

Helpwr Heddiw:
Every day, in each class, two pupils are chosen to be Helpwr Heddiw (Today’s Helper). The role of the Helpwr is to assist the teacher when completing tasks in Welsh such as Drilio, our weather chart and rehearsing our language patterns. They are also on the lookout for Welsh being used in the classroom.

Dear Parents,
We are working to achieve a Bronze Award for the Cymraeg Campus and our ‘Criw Cymraeg’ are helping us on our journey! We meet once a week and we are encouraging pupils and staff to turn Welsh into a living language at Ysgol Carreg Hir. We would like to update you on the progress we have made so far towards achieving the award.
The Criw was established by pupils who put themselves forward as they enjoy learning Welsh in class. Pupils were given badges to wear to show their peers that they are part of the Criw.
Here are just a few of the amazing things we have been doing to support Welsh learning at Ysgol Carreg Hir:
- We have put up Welsh signs around the school to label places and rooms in Welsh – Joseph (Blwyddyn 4)
- We have learnt Welsh yard games to play with the younger children – Isla (Blwyddyn 3)
- We designed our Criw Cymraeg Logo – Amelia (Blwyddyn 6)
- We have got lanyards to wear at break time to help us speak Welsh at playtime – Erin (Blwyddyn 5)
- We have got badges to wear to show we are in the Criw Cymraeg – Dylan (Blwyddyn 3)
- We have worked on our targets from 1-5 – Oliver (Blwyddyn 3)
- We have got an ideas book in our classrooms so we can write our ideas down for Criw – Joseph (Blwyddyn 4)
- We did a stop and listen walk to listen to Welsh in the classrooms – Evelyn (Blwyddyn 4)
- We held a competition to design a Croeso poster – Ben (Blwyddyn 5)
Criw Cymraeg have received training from the local authority in order to be able to play games with younger pupils on the yard at playtimes to encourage all pupils to participate in Welsh Language games. Our theme for this term is “Lliwiau” and we have learnt three games – (Enfys) (Coch, Melyn, Glas a Gwyrdd) a (Pa liw?)
Criw Cymraeg have also completed “Stop and Listen/Stopiwch a Grandewch” sessions in each class; listening out for Welsh being spoken by their peers and by grown-ups in our school.
As you can see the Criw Cymraeg are working hard to make progress towards achieving this award. We are beginning to see enthusiasm for Welsh learning throughout the school. We are looking forward to updating you further on our progress next half term.
